Fatalities as 6.3 earthquake hits Christchurch

The Courier-Mail February 22, 2011

NEW Zealand's Prime Minister John Key has announced that at least 65 people are now confirmed dead after the earthquake in Christchurch

"We may well be witnessing New Zealand's darkest day," Key said.

"This is an absolute tragedy for this city and for the people we care so much about... it's a terrifying time for the people of Canterbury.

"The death toll I have at the moment is 65 and that may rise."

Key said the advice coming in was "fluid" and it was too early to say how far the death toll could rise.

"It's not possible for me to say, or button down numbers, emergency rescue efforts are under way," he said.

"Buildings have collapsed, it's a scene of utter devastation."

Key said the quake hit the central city at a very busy time. "It was a massive earthquake on what was already weakened infrastructure," he said on New Zealand's TV One.

"It's the worst situation... we've got to get people out from where they are trapped, lots of older people will be feeling isolated."

Key, who arrived in Christchurch this  evening, said as he drove into the city there were people sitting on the roadsides with their heads in their hands.

"This is a community in agony but we will get through this," he said.

"New Zealand will regroup and Christchurch will regroup, but at the moment this is a very, very dark day."

Bodies have been seen being taken out of the damaged YHA hostel in the city.

Twenty people remain trapped on the 12th floor of a Christchurch building and two buses were crushed in the city.

NZPA reports one of those trapped, Gary Moore, saying he and 19 other colleagues were stuck on the 12th floor of the Forsyth Barr building, in central Christchurch, because the stairwell had collapsed in today's earthquake.

Buildings and houses collapsed in the 6.3 earthquake, with police and fire services confirming people had died.

Sources said there were no available ambulances left to attend incidents as emergency services were stretched to capacity.
