Vietnamese Bloggers Community Petition - The Associated Press

To Whom It May Concern,

We, the Vietnamese bloggers and democracy activists, would like to inform you that the government of Vietnam continues to escalate the repressive actions towards its citizens and criminalization of the freedom of expressions. Multiple recent arrests and harassments were made by the Vietnamese government in order to suppress the voices of the dissidents and human rights advocates.

On August 13th, 2010, a French-Vietnamese professor, Mr. Pham Minh Hoang, was arrested for blogging about democracy and social justice in Vietnam.

On Nov. 4th, 2010, a Vietnamese lawyer, Ms. Le Thi Cong Nhan, was taken into a police station for straight eight-hour interrogation regarding the poems she wrote reflecting the unfair treatments and injustice in Vietnam. Beside being put under house arrest, she was frequently called up for interrogations by the police or Secret Service agents about her interviews with foreign broadcasting news agencies.

On Nov. 5th, 2010, a Vietnamese well-known outspoken attorney, Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu (who holds a Ph. D in law), was arrested and his properties were illegally searched as the government attempted to smear his name and to frame him into a so-called “linking to prostitution” charge while he and his female attorney colleague were discussing about a civilian lawsuit case inside a hotel. Then, the following day, a high ranking police officer announced that he was charged of “violating Article 88 for spreading the propaganda against the State” even though the so-called “evidence” was just simply articles Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu wrote to promote democracy as well as social justice and to expose the government corruptions. These articles were previously published widely on internet and international broadcasting news agencies. To the common public, this scandalous arrest obviously was the retaliation of the government towards Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu because he previously had filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against the Vietnamese Prime Mininster Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung for allegedly violating laws on environmental protection, national security and cultural heritage by approving Chinese-built bauxite mining projects in Central Highlands.

Another victim of the government’s harassment is the case of Mr. Le Tran Luat, a kind and very famous lawyer, who provides free services to the poor and represents them to fight for justice in Vietnam. As the result, Mr. Le is often harassed by secret agents and local policemen. Consequently, he lost his job and often has troubles to find an apartment for rent (his boss and his landlord were called up to police station for questionings and they were forced to end the contract early).

We also would like to remind you that blogger Dieu Cay (Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai), blogger Anh Ba Saigon (Mr. Phan Thanh Hai), blogger Co Gai Do Long (Ms. Le Nguyen Huong Tra) and many other peaceful democracy activists are still under arrest by the Government of Vietnam.

We would like to request The US Department of State to put Vietnam back on the CPC list (Countries of Particular Concerns) until it fulfills its commitments for human rights.

We also urge you to call on the Government of Vietnam to release immediately and unconditionally all bloggers, all prisoners of conscience, all peaceful dissidents and democracy activists. The Government of Vietnam must respect human rights and international laws.

We appreciate very much for your attention and your support.

Respectfully,
